VALIE EXPORT (*1940)
Lay-on (Auflegung), Austria, 1972
From the series »Body configurations«
In her series »Body configurations« (1972–1982) the Austrian media artist deals with the relationship between body language as a concept determined by historic, gender and social politics and its immediate environment. Based on her critical practice of inserting the female body into the image space determined by patriachal viewing conventions, she tries to break up these structures. EXPORT also describes these representations as »externalisations of inner states by configurating the body with its environment«.
