The Ukrainian Serge Lifar became a principal dancer at the Ballets Russes in 1925. He starred as the Student in Ode by Léonide Massine, which premiered in June 1928 in Paris. In this and numerous other portraits, Huene created dramatic shadows against plain backdrops to emphasize Lifar’s dynamic poses.
