The photograph was taken in the studio of Metro Goldwin Mayer and served to promote the feature film »Mogambo« (»passion« in Swahili) by Hollywood director John Ford. Shot in Technicolor in Africa, the drama is about a big-game hunter (Clark Gable) who stands between two very different women: a British scientist’s wife (Grace Kelly) and a New York party girl (Ava Gardner).
The pose, costume, and studio setup correspond to Gardner's role as an impulsive demimondaine. The setting of this advertising picture, which is committed to a phallocentric image composition, combines traditional stereotypes of femininity with an exoticist view of Africa as it prevailed in the 1950s.
