Edited and with an essay by Marie Röbl, as well as contributions by alien productions (who also designed the book), Hermann Nitsch and Carl Aigner. Published on the occasion of the exhibition "Heinz Cibulka: Im Takt von Hell und Dunkel". Both the retrospective and the publication offer the first comprehensive overview of the artist's photographic work from 1972 onwards. Starting from his home in the Austrian Weinviertel, Heinz Cibulka has been roaming through the diverse regions of this world for more than 40 years. With the help of various media and precise observations of inconspicuous actions and ephemeral moments of life, he records them and compiles them into enigmatically tense compositions.

He uses artistic techniques such as photography, computer art and video. However, his concern is not the mastery of these media, but rather the question of how their technical advantages and shortcomings can be used to discover and explore the poetic qualities of everyday life through them.

As precise as Heinz Cibulka reads the traces of the present, he remains open in the way he reproduces them: In his works remains a remnant of the unknown, which is linked to the experiences and interpretations of others. His works are only completed in the eye of the beholder.

"Im Takt von Hell und Dunkel" ("In the rhythm of light and dark") presents works from all of the artist's creative periods: starting with the spatial installation "Stammersdorf", through early object such as the typical Heinz Cibluka "pictorial poems"  (combinations of four photographs representing Austrian, European, African, Asian and American motifs) to the large-format digital collages and multimedia works of recent years.
