10 million tons of plastic enter our oceans every year and threaten to suffocate life there. The Danube alone carries 40 tons of plastic waste into the Black Sea each year.
An important wake-up call came as early as 2009 with the award-winning documentary film Plastic Planet by Werner Boote, which exposed the catastrophe early on and brought it to public attention worldwide. But what has changed since then? Fifteen years later, has society drawn consequences from this knowledge?
These questions will be discussed by Federal Minister Norbert Totschnig (Minister for Agriculture and Forestry, Climate and Environmental Protection, Regions and Water Management), filmmaker Werner Boote, and Prof. Dr. Lukas Kenner, who researches the health effects of microplastics on humans at the Medical University of Vienna.
