OSTLICHT AT PHOTO BASEL
17.–22.06.2025 | Booth #19
At this year’s Photo Basel, our presentation centers on artists who have used the medium of photography in unique and innovative ways to make movement and time perceptible within the static image.
At the heart of our booth stands Alfons Schilling, whose work explores the relativity of perception and the expansion of pictorial space. His lenticular photographs invite viewers to actively engage with the image: through physical movement, the image content shifts—creating a dynamic, embodied visual experience that is rarely found in photography.
A similar desire to capture the ephemeral drives the work of Ernst Haas, one of the most influential figures in modern photojournalism and a pioneer of color photography. His blurred, dynamic compositions dissolve the boundaries between documentation and abstraction, transforming fleeting moments into painterly fields of color. All Ernst Haas prints offered are edition prints – silver gelatin prints and chromogenic colour prints – from the artist’s original negatives and colour transparencies, commissioned by the Ernst Haas Estate under the supervision of Alexander Haas, the artist’s son. All prints are authorized by the estate on the reverse, marked with the edition number, and signed by Alexander Haas. This selection shows only a part of the available works by Ernst Haas. Please contact us at any time for a complete overview of our portfolio. All formats indicated are paper sizes. All offered motifs are available in other formats on request.
Adding to this exploration of transience and perception, we also present a selection of rare large-format Polaroids created with the legendary 20×24-inch camera made available by the Polaroid Company in the 1980s. Today, OstLicht houses around 1,300 of these unique prints, and we are delighted to share a curated group of them at Photo Basel—including works by Julian Schnabel, Luigi Ghirri, and William Wegman. Each of these artists brings a distinctive visual language to the medium, expanding the dialogue between photography, time and perception through the unique materiality and immediacy of Polaroid.
All works are available for purchase through the gallery. Upon request, we also offer photographs from our extensive collection beyond the fair portfolio. The prices indicated are not including VAT. Framing is included in the prices.
