Jacques-Henri Lartigue sunbathing, France, Cote d'Azur, ca. 1975
At the bottom of this bird's eye view of sunbathers, the photographer Jacques-Henri Lartigue - lying on his back in blue swimming trunks - draws the main attention. A figure just jumping into the sea at the upper edge of the picture, compositionally connected to Lartigue via a vertical axis, can be seen as a homage to his photographic work, which focused on vivid snapshots of people in motion. The photograph was taken by the Japanese photographer Hosoe, who is known for his symbolic compositions in high-contrast black and white as well as dance shots.
