Loomis Dean (1917 – 2005)
Herbert and Eliette von Karajan on their sailing boat, France, St. Tropez, 1964
In 1964 LIFE magazine brought a report about the successful conductor who could afford to give up positions at the Vienna State Opera and La Scala in Milan. In addition to Karajan's career, his high-performance fleet of cars and spacious villas, his private life is also subject of the report, with a series of pictures from a family holiday in St. Tropez.
LIFE staff photographer Loomis Dean shows Eliette and Herbert von Karajan on their sailing yacht as a beautiful ideal couple. Karajan describes his (third) wife, who worked as a model before her marriage, as »young, sensitive, beautiful, full of life, enthusiastic and an excellent cook«.
