Nobuyoshi Araki (*1940)
»Daraku-en«, Japan, 2012
Araki's large-format studio still lifes of arranged flowers, dolls and dragon figures reveal the major themes of his work: Beauty and transience, desire and pain, life and death. For decades, the artist has devoted himself to these motifs in a tireless creative drive, cyclically, excessively elaborated and in constantly new formulations. His saturated color stagings not only refer to traditional Japanese imagery, from Ikebana flower art to Godzilla distopias, but also seem to give insight into his personal state of mind. The »Daraku-en« still lifes fall between »Flowers and Jamorinsky« from 2005/06 and the »Paradise« series, which he has been working on for many years.
