Nobuyoshi Araki (*1940)
Kinbaku Shamaki (frieze of 53 parts), Japan, 2006
Available only as set
For this extraordinary installation, Nobuyoshi Araki selected 53 photographs from his archives, assembled them into a monumental frieze measuring 8.2 meters in length and painted over the constellation with acrylic paint. »Kinbaku Shamaki« is unique both in terms of its dimensions and its specific combination of photography and painting. The title refers to the Japanese tradition: »Kinbaku«, meaning bondage art, while the term »Shamaki« stands for both the photography and the Japanese picture scrolls. Peter Coeln, collector and friend of Araki, saw the fascinating work shortly after it was created in the archives of Rat Hole, the gallery that represents the artist in Tokyo. At the time, the frieze was not for sale as it was intended for a museum in Paris. Three months later, the complete frieze was finally offered for sale and Peter Coeln bought it immediately.
