Nobuyoshi Araki (*1940)
Sexual Desire (portfolio of 15 works), Japan, ca. 1996
Available only as complete portfolio
In 1996, the series »Serie Sexual« was first presented as a large wall installation by the Frankfurter Kunstverein as well as the MMK Museum für Moderne Kunst in Frankfurt and recreated in book form. Araki's extensive sequence of color photographs is to be read as a reflection of modern Tokyo, its inhabitants and their lives. The series also provocatively presents the physical self-empowerment of young women, through the conscious decision to be photographed by the much-discussed photographer.
In the portfolio »Serie Sexual«, published by Taka Ishii Editions, the contrasting image selection of the series is further condensed in 15 photographs: Tokyo street and everyday scenes are juxtaposed and equated with erotic shots, as forms of modern life reality, as inverted mirrors.
