Commoy Pierre and Blanchard Gilles have been working together under the name "Pierre et Gilles" since 1977. Their work Vive la France shows three athletes (Serge, Moussa, Robert) of different skin colours standing in naked solidarity - apart from silver shoes and socks that correspond to the French flag - in a stadium filled with festive confetti and spectators. An ethnically diverse national football team won the very first FIFA World Cup in France in 1998, and the team immediately became a symbol of national multiculturalism. During the matches proud fans chant "Black, Blanc, Beur" (black, white and Arabic), a game on the French tricolour flag "blue, blanc, rouge".
On the occasion of an exhibition in 2012 in the Vienna Leopold Museum, the motif was placarded all over Vienna and often defaced. "Many people told us that they wanted or had to destroy the picture [to protect] their children," said Klaus Pokorny, spokesman for the Leopold Museum. For safety reasons, it was decided to cover the players' genitals.
