Moments of Transgression in Photography

OstLicht draws attention to pivotal moments of transgression in the history of photography, which significantly expanded the potential of the medium. Gustave Le Gray famously used elaborate montage to create views as if taken instantaneously from nature. The album »Mélanges Photographiques« by Louis-Désiré Blanquart-Évrard represents an influential starting point for and early precursor to the mass distribution of the photographic image via books. The Bechers’ serial and conceptual approach firmly positioned their architectural views in the realm of the arts. Vienna Actionist Rudolf Schwarzkogler hired professional photographers for the documentation of his performances, challenging traditional notions of authorship. His contemporary Alfons Schilling with his three-dimensional lenticular photographs explored the relativity of visual perception. And finally Julian Schnabel, using a rare Polaroid 20x24 inch camera, stages each of his portraits as a norm-defying singular event.
