Mario Giacomelli (1925 – 2000)
The painter Walter Bastari, Italy, Senigallia, 1992
From the series »Il pittore Bastari«
Since the 1950s, Giacomelli has developed his characteristic visual language in landscapes and documentary work blocks. The stark contrasts and graphic qualities of his photographs are appreciated internationally. Living in the same hometown as the photographer – who was already famous at the time – the painter Walter Bastari, who was around 20 years his junior, commissioned a portrait for an exhibition catalog in 1991.
In the course of taking pictures in the painter's studio and in the surrounding area of Senigallia, the two artists developed a series of extraordinary pictorial ideas and ironic poses. In the particularly surreal scenarios, even props were used – such as the pigeon figure in the branches here – which otherwise contradicted Giacomelli's way of working. The collaboration proved so fruitful that the results eventually filled a photo book of their own.
