Cora Pongracz (1943 – 2003)
Arnulf Rainer, Austria, Leibnitz, Retzhof, October 1969
From the edition »Austrian Avant-Garde of the 1970s«
Limited edition of 5
Like the previous one, this photograph was taken for the catalog of the "Fourth International Painters' Weeks" at Schloss Retzhof in Styria, where Cora Pongracz was commissioned to take portraits of each of the twelve participating artists. While otherwise classic artist portraits were created, Rainer decided to pose in a disfiguring grimace. The shot thus corresponds to the block of works that he had begun shortly before with vending machine photos at Vienna's Westbahnhof and which became famous in a revised form as the »Face Farces« series.
