Cora Pongracz (1943 – 2003)
H.C. Artmann at Café Hawelka, Vienna, Dorotheergasse, ca. 1971
From the edition »Austrian Avant-Garde of the 1970s«
Limited edition of 5
The poet and translator Hans Carl Artmann (1921-2000) gave important impulses to the avant-garde from the post-war years onwards, communicating, for example, procedures of Dadaism and Surrealism to the Vienna Group, or breaking new ground in the experimental use of dialect language.
Although sitting deep in the middle ground of the picture and therefore rendered relatively small, his face attracts attention as the most contrasting part of the picture. Artmann, however, is not looking into the camera, but seems to be engrossed in a conversation. From the stacks of newspapers in the foreground to the bustle behind the bar, the dense composition illustrates the atmosphere in the legendary Viennese literary café.
