Mario Giacomelli (1925 – 2000)
Untitled (Couple in a field of sunflowers), Italy, ca. 1972
From the series »Caroline Branson da Spoon River«
The photograph is from a series inspired by the poem »Caroline Branson« from the anthology »Spoon River« by Edgar L. Masters. Giacomelli engaged a befriended couple of lovers and photographed them in places with references to the atmospheric metaphors of the poem. He intensified the form-dissolving moments of his visual language and created extraordinarily abstracted depictions that are modelled on memories. In this way, he achieved a disruption of the spatial continuum in the image and made the individual elements appear like fragments in the spotlight of memories.
