The bond with one’s homeland and the cycle of life and death are recurring themes in Giacomelli’s work. The subject of the good earth is also present in Giacomelli’s landscape photographs, which he collected under the title »Presa di coscienza sulla natura«. While the earlier works were mostly taken from an elevated point in the landscape, Giacomelli started flying with a pilot in the 1970s. His photographs dissolve fields into graphic arrangements of lines, showing how the landscape is marked by human labour and time. The corrugated ground echoes the deep lines etched into the faces of the inhabitants of the old-age home. In the style and spirit of Land Art, Giacomelli was not averse to manipulating the working of the land, instructing farmers to plough forms he had designed into the soil. On the one hand, the resulting images reflect his personal feelings; on the other, they also embody a clear, courageous and conceptually trend-setting attitude.
