Werner Bischof (1916 – 1954)
Indochina, South Vietnam, July 1952
The nationalists fought for the independence of South Vietnam against the French, who ruled the protectorate of Indochina, in the Indochina War from 1945 to 54 under Ho Chi Minh. The country was then divided into North (ruled by Ho Chi Minh) and South (France). In 1952, Bischof traveled from outpost to outpost through the delta of the Red River on behalf of the magazine »Paris Match«. He took photographs in Tonkin, Cian Coc, Bat Nao, Ba Rau and Lai Chan, where he was trapped for three weeks by a monsoon downpour. He also wrote a diary and made numerous sketches in which he recorded the everyday life of the population, who were reserved or even hostile towards the French soldiers.
