Martin Parr (1952 – 2025)
Dessert, Hungary, Budapest, 1998
From the series »Common Sense«
In the later 1990s, Parr often exhibited his series as inkjet prints, which he pinned to the walls in a dense row without glass. This signed work comes from one such presentation and was also published in his photobook »Common Sense«. Both in terms of printing technique and aesthetics, it is typical of Parr's bright colors, in which he photographs everyday clichés and lapses in taste.
He deliberately shows the ugliness of late-capitalist everyday culture, which is usually avoided or retouched as a motif. The predominant motifs in »Common Sense« are desserts, fast food, and shod women's feet as well as other fragmenting close-ups of vacationers and mannequins, which he photographed in various countries.
