Barbara Kasten (*1936)
»Metaphase 4«, 1986
The Chicago-born artist began with constructions in front of the camera that were inspired by images of modernist abstractionists such as Moholy-Nagy or Kandinsky. She also incorporated photographs of iconic architecture into her works, for which she uses mirrors, coloured light and elements of building construction, glass panels and translucent, geometric acrylic bodies. She has been photographing these sculptural settings since the 1980s with the help of her professional lighting teams, as one of her main focal points is the design of light and the creation of complex shadows. The title of this work, taken with a large-format instant camera, refers to the second phase of cell division, in which the chromosomes are arranged in the equatorial plane.
