Olivia Parker (*1941)
»Interior with Birds and Peaches«, from the series »Instant Anomalies«, 1981
sold
After graduating in art history from Wellesley College in 1973, Olivia Parker began making and photographing ephemeral constructions. Many of the series she has created since then, such as »Signs of Life« (1978), »Under the Looking Glass« (1983) or »Questionable Objects and Events« (1990–1996), feature props from classical still lifes, such as flowers, fruit, animal motifs or shells, and some of her work can indeed be categorised in this genre. Sometimes, however, she arranges these objects in small installations made of boxes, rough wooden boards and twine, which obscure the spatial relations; when she also incorporates pieces of writing or reproductions of old prints, the arrangements in front of the camera are transformed into stylish and complex pictorial compositions.
