Elfriede Mejchar (1924 – 2020)
Puppet, Vienna, Austria, 1999
The photographer, who is primarily known for her suburban and architectural documentation, developed a completely different, symbolic visual language in her montages. Here, she leads us into an artificial pictorial space: starting with a vividly and sharply drawn girl's hand holding a headless, worn leather doll, through cloud-like draped fabrics to the shadow of a hand in a window cross, the tangibility and degree of reality seem to diminish towards the back. The eponymous pet name, used in Germany primarily for babies, girls or lap dogs, stands for the epitome of helpless, Bambi-eyed cuteness. This clichéd child/female scheme is ironically taken to absurdity.
