Nobuyoshi Araki (*1940)
Satchin and his brother Mabo, Japan, 1963
Araki studied film and photography at Chiba University from 1959 to 1963. At the time, his approach to the medium was still strongly influenced by the filmmakers of Italian Neorealism. In 1964, he won the first photo competition of Taiyo magazine with a few black-and-white still photographs from his graduation film project Satchin and his brother Mabo. The photo series was printed in the July issue and is thus Araki's first publication.
Araki has taken this photograph in 1963, when he followed a group of boys, mostly during their games in the streets. It was published in 1997 in his book of the same title by Heibonsha Limited.
