André Kertész (1894 – 1985)
Budafok wine cellars, Hungary, 1919
The view from an elevated vantage point of picturesque cellar alleys and adjoining vineyards dates back to the early Hungarian work of the important photographer, before he moved to Paris. During his military service in the First World War and in the years that followed, Kertész devoted himself to the meagre everyday life of his homeland, its modest joys and misfortunes. He also captured moments of poetic power with a sure hand and demonstrated his talent for coherent image composition early on, as this picture proves.
