HENRI CARTIER-BRESSON
The Decisive Moment
The sixth edition of OstLicht Prisma is dedicated to Henri Cartier-Bresson, one of the central protagonists of photography. As co-founder of the Magnum agency and pioneer of photojournalistic storytelling, Cartier-Bresson shaped the visual memory of the 20th century. His photographs are more than documents: they are composed observations – characterised by precision, spontaneity and a keen sense of what Cartier-Bresson himself called le moment décisif, the decisive moment.
The selection brings together 20 prints from different decades and continents. It takes us from Paris to New York, San Francisco and Orgosolo to India – from the cremation of Mahatma Gandhi to the Paris student movement in May 1968.
